Job Description

Who we are:

Love & Carrots is more than landscaping…

We design, install, and maintain organically grown vegetable gardens, transforming your backyard into a fresh, organic banquet.  We at Love & Carrots believe the local food movement is a critical catalyst in environmental activism. In the United States the potential for impact by way of everyday choices is immense, yet after decades of consumerism-as-champion, our culture does not easily lend itself widespread change through daily choices. We believe food is a good start. Choosing what to eat is one of the easiest ways to be a proactive environmental steward, and eating locally is the simplest solution with the most impact so far. Urban Agriculture is the local food movement at its best and tackles a multifaceted problem. It is food production right at the site of high level consumption, it is greening spaces, it is education, it is zero food miles, and it is the healthy alternative.

Love & Carrots provides gardening assistance to people who would like to have an organic vegetable garden in their backyard, front yard, patio, balcony, or even bay window. DC is unique in that it has abundant yard space for a city. Many people here have both a front and back yard, however not many people use these spaces to grow food. We would like to see that potential realized and so far, we have seen that the interest in home gardening in DC already exists. Our aim is to help get people started growing their own food as locally as possible – in their own yard!

Who you are:

A person looking to share awesome carpentry and landscaping skills with us while learning more about urban farming, greenhouse production, garden installation and carpentry, agricultural education, community engagement and more!  Maybe it's your hobby, maybe it's your career path -- either way, we're a great place to help you get to the next level of your journey.

Be prepared to absorb a lot of info through meaningful work and to find your niche within our crew-- maybe you have an artistic eye, a love of seeding, a knack for constructing trellis--we'd love to find out and help you build on those natural talents!

Experience:

  • At least 3 seasons/years of carpentry and building (e.g. cold frame, rain barrel, raised bed, and trellis construction; rock border and stone walkway installation; knowledge of proper tool use and understanding of basic engineering principles as related to small-scale construction)
  • At least 3 years/seasons of landscaping (e.g. perennial shrub and tree care, native flower and pollinator garden installations; double-digging and mulch/compost spreading techniques)
