Job Description About Us:

We are Chicago’s food bank — a nonprofit food distribution and training center that provides food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.

The Food Depository, founded in 1979, makes a daily impact across Cook County with a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile programs, children’s programs, older adult programs and innovative responses that address the root causes of hunger. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 66 million pounds of shelf-stable food, fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 150,000 meals every day.

Position Description:

Overview:

Under the guidance of the No Kid Hungry Illinois team, the intern will assist and support research, publications, and outreach efforts to further our work to end hunger.  

The No Kid Hungry Illinois campaign is a public-private coalition working to eliminate child hunger in Illinois.  Launched in 2012 as a partnership with Share Our Strength and the Illinois Commission to End Hunger, the Campaign is working to connect kids in need with nutritious food and teach their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals.  No Kid Hungry is working in 32 states and the District of Columbia.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the research, writing, of the second Illinois Breakfast Report.
  • Identify and monitor relevant federal and state policy initiatives impacting the work of the No Kid Hungry Illinois campaign.
  • Assist with the scheduling, coordination, and technical assistance for the Summer Meals Kick-off events.
  • Provide research needed for work groups to continue moving action plans forward.
  • Prepare campaign-related communications, including social media posts and presentations.
Qualifications:

Desired qualifications include current status as a graduate student studying Public Policy, Public Administration, Social Service Administration, Urban Planning or Public Health, completion of one relevant internship or equivalent experience, strong writing and communication skills, creativity and self-motivation. 

Time Frame:

A minimum of 16 hours per week is desired.  We are seeking candidates who are available from April 2014 through August 2014.
