Job Description
Four-season organic/permaculture vegetable and fruit farm in rural Northwest CT seeks one full-time seasonal assistant growers, to begin as soon as February. We grow annual vegetables on 5 acres and in high and low tunnels, apples in old and new orchards, and are developing perennial fruit and vegetable production areas and a forest garden. Our flock of 200 pastured hens will double this year. Farm products are marketed through CSA, a small farmstand, and local wholesale accounts. This season we will plant a PYO display/children's garden and host seasonal farm events for CSA members. Infrastructure projects for 2014 include a third greenhouse, second chicken tractor, packinghouse and farmstand improvements, employee housing cabin, and mechanical workshop.
Assistant growers participate in all aspects of food production including chicken chores, greenhouse seedling production, record-keeping, planting, hoeing, weeding, mulching, harvest, and washing and packing produce. Other job responsibilities will be designed around the employee's skills and interests. Projects may include building infrastructure, event planning, mechanical maintenance, equipment operation, livestock management, social media, writing, or bookkeeping.
Experience with outdoor or production work is useful. Interest and experience in greenhouse seedling and tomato production preferred. We are looking for folks who like working with people, can follow directions and work independently, and are eager to learn. Ability to lift 50 lbs, and willingness to work long hours in peak seasons and outdoors in all weather conditions required.
