Summer Apprentices Little Bee Pop's

  • Date Posted May 31, 2012
  • Location Mountain View / Hayward, CA
  • Category Business / Culinary
  • Job Type Internship/Apprentice
Job Description Little Bee Pops is seeking hard-working, self-motivated summer apprentices to join us in our kitchen this summer, making fresh fruit & honey pops!

We are a brand-new tiny artisan food business, and we make healthy treats for kids and adults, sourcing all of our produce & honey from a 150-mile radius of the Bay Area. We work out of our home office in Mountain View, and our shared kitchen in Hayward.

Who are we? We’re serious foodies and community activists who’ve worked for years in sustainable agriculture and food systems, so our goals are more than just building a successful business. We’re about building a successful business that also supports an equitable food system and healthy communities!  And this ain’t your ordinary business internship… see our Kickstarter video to get a sense of what you’re getting yourself in to!

Whether you’re an aspiring food entrepreneur wanting to learn your way around a commercial kitchen, or a business major looking to get knee-deep in supply chain and distribution, we are hoping to find a few enthusiastic people to help us make it through this shaky, exciting first summer!

This is a part-time, seasonal position for the summer. Hours are flexible but we’re looking for someone available June-August/September for 14-16 hrs/week. We want 1-2 apprentices who would do one day in the kitchen (8 hours), and then spend the rest of their time flexing their start-up muscles by taking on a project of their own.

The possibilities are endless, but a few ideas we’ve had include: finding us new farmers and beekeepers and strengthening our sourcing network, traveling to our farms and doing some storytelling about our product’s growers, doing outreach in Santa Clara County and helping us find new event venues to pursue, creating systems that help us track our inventory and distribution channels, or brainstorming and executing summer marketing campaigns.

Basically, we ALL put our time in the kitchen (and yeah, you can carpool with us if you want) – and then it’s about whatever you’re into learning and doing!

We’re a startup, so if things take off we may be able to add more pay, hours and responsibility. In fact, the right candidate can get the chance to participate in every aspect of our sweet startup, from new flavor creation to sales to produce procurement to selling pops at Farmers’ Markets.

On an average day, we’re working to churn out large batches of healthy, locavore pops in the kitchen while strategizing the future of the company while we chop, blend, and freeze. It’s hard work, but also meditative and satisfying. And yes, our “quality control” process is… yummy!

Pop Star Responsibilities
On an average (8-hour) kitchen day, you will help to:
  • Produce between 400-600 fresh fruit pops
  • Label, pack, and store pops with care
  • Prepare ingredients for each flavor including hulling strawberries, pitting cherries, mixing honey, de-seeding raspberries, etc.
  • Help inventory ingredients to determine produce purchases
  • Follow all sanitation and safety guidelines with care
  • Keep kitchen and freezer clean and organized
  • Wash and sterilize dishes & utensils throughout the day
On your own time (additional 6-8 hours, from home or with us) you will:
  • Execute a project of your own design that will help Little Bee Pops grow successfully and sustainably
  • Utilize the talent of the Little Bee Pops ownership team to make your project successful

Pop Star Qualifications
  • Energy and enthusiasm
  • Strong work ethic & standards
  • Ability to stand for 8 hours, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Great tastebuds & a passion for good, fair food
  • Ability to text and/or check email regularly
  • Experience working in a food business a bonus, but not required
  • Strong preference for candidates with a passion for local food and/or sustainable agriculture
  • A good idea of what you’d want to do to help us grow!
Compensation
  • Stipend of $80/week
  • As many pops as you can eat
  • Produce, jam, honey, eggs – straight from our own gardens to your kitchen!
